The Ayres Sensory Integration ® (ASI) Approach

Why is Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) Important for Development?

A well-integrated sensory system is essential for children and young people to participate meaningfully in everyday activities. Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) therapy supports the way a child or young person processes and responds to sensory input, promoting better self-regulation, engagement, and functional independence. A well-integrated sensory system allows children and young people to:

  • Regulate their emotions and behaviour, leading to improved focus and attention
  • Develop gross and fine motor skills, including coordination, balance, and posture
  • Build body and spatial awareness, encouraging confidence in movement and play and leisure.
  • Improve self-care abilities, such as dressing, feeding, and hygiene routines
  • Enhance academic performance through better handwriting, visual processing, and problem-solving.

Who Benefits from ASI?

While all children and young persons (even adults) benefit from engaging, sensory-rich environments, ASI is particularly effective for those experiencing:

  • Sensory Processing Difficulties (SPD)
  • Dyspraxia / Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related social communication needs
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Motor coordination or postural control difficulties
  • Developmental delays and learning difficulures.

ASI therapy is grounded in evidence-based practice and can help children and young persons build the foundation they need for improved daily functioning, confidence, and participation at home, school, and in the community.
